Mixing Aulonocara with mbuna
Just wondering what your thoughts are on mixing peacocks with mbuna?

Re: Mixing Aulonocara with mbuna
Usually it's not recommended as most mbuna are too rambunctious for the laid back peacocks. I have heard of people that had success with the jacobfreibergi variants and milder mbuna such as yellow labs, rusties, and yellowtail acei.
I'm sure others have had success with many different combos, but this would be the best "recipe for success." And, of course, the larger the tank, the better.

I have a mixed 125 gallon tank filled with Mbuna, Haps, and Peacocks and they all do well together.
Now I do have a lot of rocks and places to hide so my tank may be an exception to the rule.

I agree with Chad. Aulonocara jocobfreibergi works well with many mbuna species. They are pretty tough. Loads of people also have Aulonocara sp. "stuartgranti maleri" together with aggressive mbunas like the dems without any problems. I guess if one would choose mbunas that are mostly aggressive within it´s own species it should work pretty well.

The hybrid Aulonocara "fire fish" also works with many mbuna species.

i agree, i have a 75 gal with mbuna, peacocks, and haps, i also think if you raise them up together you will improve your chances of them getting along

Re: Mixing Aulonocara with mbuna
We keep a 120 gallon mixed tank. Our Sunshine Peacock is by far the bully of the tank with our Red Top Ndumbi in a close second ... despite the fact that they are much smaller than our Borleyi, Pro Insignis and Tangerine Tiger. I do agree that raising them together from about the same size will greatly improve your chances of a happy, healthy tank. If you're adding to an already established tank, DON'T FORGET to rearrange the tank when adding new fish. New territories can be established, thus keeping the aggression towards the new guys to a minimum.

ive found out if you keep it a hap -peacock tank and have a mabuna or 2 its o.k. usually , but if you do a mabuna tank with only a couple haps and peas then the mabuna will wipe them out
