29 gallon for Tangs?
Would a standard sized 29 gallon tank be large enough to house a pair of J. transcriptus or a pair of leleupi? Those are the species available to me locally and I was giving some thought to trying some out.

You could definitely do the transcriptus, the leleupi could probably be done as well but I'm most certain that the transcriptus would do better. I wouldn't stop with just the juli's tho, I'd add some shellies in with them. You could create a interesting little Tang tank with those 2, shell bed on one side, plants in the middle, rocks on the other side for the Juli's. Another option (if available) would be a pair of calvus or comp's in place of the juli's (just a thought). There are definitely options and possibilites

Re: 29 gallon for Tangs?
Thanks! I've been wanting to try some Tangs for the longest time.
I haven't seen any calvus or comps, but the shellies are a possibility. I would love to find some females to go with my poor males. I was thinking that I would need to buy a few of whatever I decide to go with and then hope for a pair to form. I'm going to make a trip up to my only decent lfs next week and will see what he has in this time. I'm always looking at his Julies and leleupis and wanting to bring some home.

I agree, buy a group of juvies and wait for a pair to form. It would be great if you could find females for your shellies, they'd really appreciate some female companions. If you decided to try comps I can prolly hook you up with some of mine, I'll pm you the details If my paracyps will start spawning, we could probably fit them in the tank too.

Re: 29 gallon for Tangs?
I just started a 55 gallon for the wife with comps and shellies. So far I would say they do quite well together as the both go all over the tank. Haven't had any spawning yet so maybe then more of a defined territory will be established but so far they get along fine.

Re: 29 gallon for Tangs?
They are doing great. They are big enough that I can actually see them now. Still really difficult getting a picture though.
I also ended up bringing home some leleupis -- I just couldn't decide and I had a 20 gallon tank that I had emptied.
I was pretty surprised at how fast they paired up and really surprised to find babies from them. With my luck, I usually end up with nothing but males.
I have another 29 gallon tank with some mbuna juvies growing out, keeping it cycled for any additional Tangs. Hmm....

Re: 29 gallon for Tangs?
hey betty, what species of julies are those?
i think i can give an explanation as to why some fry are bigger than others...
i have read that J. transcriptus will lay 1 - 2 eggs at a time, every few days, and soon you will have a variety of different size fry swimming about the tank.
others are called "clutch spawners" that is why there is a larger amount of fry the same size.

Belle, they are transcriptus. Now that is interesting about the eggs every few days. I wish I could see up under those rocks and in the little cave. I haven't been able to see any eggs at all.
