Re: My favorite cichlid, Tropheus
Now that's what I'm talkin bout!!! One of these days, hopefully soon I'll finally be able to afford my tropheus colony. I've been waiting so long...
If the Ilangi's don't convert some people... we'll have to start checking for pulses around here
Great photo's and tropheus Klaus!!!

LOL, you guys are too funny
I keep Tropheus since the mid 1970's and will probably never be without at least one group. At one point I kept 7 different groups but I'm down to two now, T. sp. "Cape Nundo" and T. sp. "Katonga". Needed the tank space since I got interested in some CA's and SA's. I also have dedicated some of my tanks to some endangered species.
Tropheus are one of the easiest cichlids to keep if you stick to some rules. They are also one of the most interesting to watch. Their social behavior is amazing and after a while you will be able to whose the boss, whose second and so on. There is always movement in a tank full of Tropheus.

I want to keep Tropheus one of these days as well. They remind me of mbuna, so I know they will be a good choice.

Betty, just to mention the name "mbuna" in connection with Tropheus is sacrileges.
I am not sure if the "Association of Tropheus Keepers" will give you permission after THAT statement. I will put in a good word for you because I really do like you a lot but I am afraid it won't help anymore.

Re: My favorite cichlid, Tropheus
Oh boy, that is a tough question Betty.
There are 6 Tropheus species as of today but there are over 120 different color variants. Not sure how many different variants I kept over the years but it was quite a few and to pick a favorite is not easy. There are a few I like most:
Tropheus sp. "Moba II" (Murago)
Tropheus sp. "Cape Nundo" (Golden Chisanse)
There are more but it's tough to choose. Just think of it this way: A 30 year old single guy is told to spent the day walking up and down a beach on a hot day in California and is asked at the end of the day which girl he liked best. He'll have a hard time picking

Excuses, excuses, excuses....... you are just scared of them :afraid:Micheal wrote:Ok the closest I am to converting is tropheops cause as mike knows just not enough blue for me.
Not enough blue eh....
Re: My favorite cichlid, Tropheus
Klaus, while the Chaitika has plenty enough blue for us... Mike wants his fish solid blue. When I first showed him some tropheus his first comment was "not enough blue for me"...
I'd like to think 2010 will be the year that I can finally get my Kasanga colony...
I'd like to eventually have 4 colonies... but at this rate it may never happen.

Hopefully I changed some peoples mind toward these fish.

Maybe that one would have enough blue for me, so maybe you did change a few minds.

Re: My favorite cichlid, Tropheus
Is that tropheus blue rainbow a fish that would be fairly easy to find? (Just wondering)

Re: My favorite cichlid, Tropheus
Not likely Betty, I have never seen them in an LFS. However, you can get them through importers or local breeders.
Re: My favorite cichlid, Tropheus
That figures the tropheops I really want are hardly ever exported.

Re: My favorite cichlid, Tropheus
They are pretty regularly imported, just not something you'll find in a lfs. I know someone who usually has both wilds and F1's but unless you live near Louisville KY you're looking at shipping them.
Cap, I'm very proud of you... almost brought a tear to my eye to hear you say you liked a tropheus!!!
