sex change
every so often i hear this and i always blow it off has just some fish that was always a male but had juvie colors or was the sub dominate fish, but now a guy i know who has a fish that i know for a fact is a female because it was my fish and i have video of this fish spawning with the same male he has with her now, this same fish is now said to be changing sex and turning into a male with fins changing and full on male colors i have not seen this fish yet but i will be taking this fish back with the known male, has anyone found any proof this really happening in a cichlid fish? nothing i have found makes me want to believe this is happening with this fish, you need not tell about saltwater fish changing sex for i know that clown fish and others in the saltwater world do this, the fish is aristochromis cristi and some of you may remember the video i posted here of this fish laying eggs.

Re: sex change
Wow, interesting. I wasn't aware it was possible even in marine fish. Pretty neat stuff.
Re: sex change
Heard about it a few times and also read an article about it. Don´t really know what to believe. Found the video. Gonna look for the article.

Re: sex change
I've always been skeptical, but I suppose it's possible. I think a lot of what you read in forums of people claiming their fish changed sex is probably not true and just color changes due to maturity or dominance. (The auratus is one that I've read about several times as changing sexes.)

Re: sex change
Hey bro, its the Champsochromis c., not the A. cristi.
She/he still has pointed fins, but now NO color of male at all.
In fact, they now look like they are tryin to get busy???
She/he was coloring up like a male for about 2 months.
some blue in the face and some orange on her/his fins.
Now no color, wierd! I'm sure now that she is female, but what was goin on IDK.

Re: sex change
I had some P. saulosi, and some of the males and females at times would color up or
fade out to resemble the opposite sex. I'm sure it had something to do with their place in the peck order and intercommunication within the colony.
Also, don't crabro change their colors back and forth?

Re: sex change
Looking at that last picture, I would have thought she was a male.

Impressive looking female! I would have guessed that the first pic to be male as well with that impressive dorsal and anal fins. Very nice.

That is what she is supposed to look like. But 3 weeks ago she was somewhat blue and had orange color to her fins by the egg spots.
Pretty much looked like a sub dom. male. Not now though, they are tryin to breed. These fish are mature, almost a foot long.
