Tropheus question
Wondering how important the markings on the bodies are. Looking at pictures of some of the different types with marks like one or two large spots/blotches on their sides, some of them are a little different in size and shape and outline. Is this something to watch out for? (For example, mbuna with irregular bars that blend or are missing aren't desirable and some people cull them from breeding stock.)

Re: Tropheus question
Betty, I assume that you are talking about just appearance. Intensity of the colors surely is desirable but the marking are different from fish to fish. However, the color intensity can change immensely depending on the mute they are in. To see Tropheus in an LFS tank and make a decision there is not easy. Personally I would NEVER cull a fish because his markings or color is not perfect. Usually it's the breeders fault because he did not choose the right parents.
In nature or in a good functioning tank, Tropheus use color to recognize each other.

Re: Tropheus question
Thank you Klaus. I think that answers my question.
Oh, by "cull", I meant removing it from the fish that are breeding, so as not to have the messed up bars or stripes being reproduced, but I wouldn't kill them either.
