i have decided i am not going to give up on saltwater just yet Wink

hubby has given me the ok to get this yippee , http://columbus.craigslist.org/for/1506658586.html the person is willing to take $275 for it all, then i am gonna sell my 24 gallon and the new stand with this tank since i like my stand more Laughing

so i will be basically paying $175 for the brand new nano cube, if i can sell my aquapod for $100 min.

i was trying to find on fully stocked and setup for a decent price and so far i have only found this one here http://columbus.craigslist.org/for/1492325903.html but the guy hasnt emailed back and let me know what all it comes with. so for now the nano cube is a go... not going to set it up for a while, i gotta slowly get all the equiptment for it Laughing

not sure if i will need a chiller, i will set it up and if i decide i do then i will get one later on, just gonna use a quad cooling fan , and buy an ATO unit first and foremost Wink

i am guessing i will have this setup in a year or so....so this is def going to be a learning expierence for me(the patience part anyways rollin )

i am excited, my first ever brand new tank... thumbs up

Did you have problems with your first SW tank? After I get the 24X24 set up for the shellies, I have a little eclipse 12 that I am going to try to set up as a fish only SW. If it turns out well, then I may try a bigger one.

this will be my first salt tank affraid i am gathering up the supplies first, and then once we move i will be setting it all up.

i have heard the smaller the tank the harder it is to get right, but if you are doing fish only i think you will have no problem..its just like freshwater, the smaller the tank the harder an oops is on the fish and stock Wink

That is true, but the little Eclipse was given to me, and I have quite a bit of store credit at a lfs, so with their help, I'm going to give it a try.

hey chris i need some help wink

i got a chiller, the jbj artica 1/10hp, and the POS pump that came with it doesnt work which after being on the local salt forum i am glad it doesnt(rio pump which i guess is a no no in saltwater b/c someone local had one bust and leak oil into his tank.)

now i am planning on running this on a 28 gallon nano cube, along with an aqua c remora protein skimmer...

now the problem i am having is, how am i going to be able to run the chiller(pump for that),the pump for the remora and 2 pumps for the wave maker in the back of my tank ponder

thanks a bunch!

well ur probably not going to be able too... the thing about the all-in-one cubes like ours is adding more equipment. they are designed as ergonomically as possible but did no really leave a way for more "advanced" equipment to be added traditionally.

are u going to be putting a halide over the tank? if u are i would say 1-2 radio shack fans would do the trick. if it doesn't then u may have to plumb an external pump behind or beneath the aquarium, to run the chiller. for that chiller if u do have to plumb, keep head height in mind for a pump that will put out 250gph.

one issue to consider is evaporation: my 14 cube would be blowing air after 3 days (and it was topped off to the brim)... and letting it evaporate that much raises ur salinity cuz water evaps, salt doesn't. (to anyone new to saltwater remember to always "top off" with fresh r/o water)

keep a bucket of r/o water handy for daily top-offs. i buffer my top off water with Kent R/O Right to not sway ph as much.

let me know what ur plans are.

i am not running a halide, only the stock 105 watt CF light that is on the tank.

i have the chiller so i would like to use it Wink

i am going to order the install kit from jbj so that i can have smaller hoses into the back of the tank, 1/2" instead of 3/4"...

and would love to figure out a pump size that would work externally to pump the water at 400gph with a head height of about 4-5 foot, just for extra measures, but have no idea where to begin looking.. Laughing

and yeah i am going to invest in an ATO unit later on down the road before i set it up. Wink

ah those are nice, so i could get one of those and the install kit from jbj and just hook the chiller up with the pump external? instead of in the back of the tank?

also i am thinking of the 1800, says 475gph, and max head of 7 feet...should be enough right?

also it says inlet-3/4" and outlet-3/4-1"
now my problem with that is, the install kit is 1/2" hose, and i have 1/2 elbows on the chiller its self, so i am not sure how to fix that problem...lol

this is so annoying, i really want to run the chiller with the tank but i am beginning to think its not such a good idea.... Laughing

yes, and yes the 1800 would be the one i would use... when u get the pump it will come with a bag of fittings (screw-in/gasketed). you will take the intake cover off (just pulls off) and put a fitting onto it...

now as far as going to 1/2" tubing... the intake line on the pump will have to be 3/4" or else it will shorten the life of the pump dramatically. You can fit it down to 1/2" for the outake line on the pump.

I have been running an eclipse 12 nano for over two years now and have had zero problems with it. I know that "they" say the bigger the better, but being smaller isn't really any more difficult. In a 12g tank, you need to make sure you stock it right and feed it right. Water chemistry has to be monitored more than a big tank because it can change fast. 1/4 to 1/2" water evaperation causes the salinity to jump over 1.026. So, that is not a lot of water but a big change in the salinity. I do not use the carbon filter pads. I use a bio bag instead. I am not a fan of carbon. The bio wheel in the eclips seems to work well but I think they make too much noise.

Once your tank is established, make gradual changes to get your water chemistry back to normal. Just like acclimating a new fish to your tank.

thanks scott,

the tank i am going to stock is a 28 gallon nano cube, with hopefully a 10 gallon sump.

i might try to run the chiller in the sump along with my skimmer, heater, and some chaeto, live rock rubble and some sand...like a fuge.

i am just wondering if that would work?

thanks Wink
