It really does sound to me like something somehow got into your aquarium. Had you recently added liquid to the tank from a container you don't normally use or had someone in the familly used one of your aquarium containers for another purpose?

One time I used a 5g bucket that was designated for my aquarium but someone else used for floor cleaning. Luckily I noticed some residue as I added new water to the tank and immedietly did a complete tear down and cleaning. I also ran some cracole for a week in my filter to capture anything I may have missed. Fortunatly I didn't lose any fish but I have a feeling I could have killed off the entire tank if I hadn't noticed the cloudiness in the water I added to the tank.
