Box filters Empty Box filters

Does anyone use these any more? I used to have them years (decades) ago and I've started using them again. I like them in my plecostomus grow out tanks because they can't eat them like they do the sponge filters. Very Happy I also find them easier to clean. I keep some bio balls in them along with some filter floss, so all I do is toss the floss once a week.

I've never used them but I can remember my Uncle Norton having them in his guppy tanks back in the mid 60s. Veil-tails were all the rage then and he had a bank of 10 gallons trying to perfect his own breed. An old technology that was around before and has outlasted Under Gravel Filters.

It's my understanding that many breeders still use these because you can economically run so many of them on a decent air pump.

For your situation it's an excellent idea for your Plecos.

My aunt used to use them in her fishroom too! I remember having a layer of carbon and some floss back in the old days. They still come with those two items, but I'm using the bio instead of the carbon in mine.

I started the hobby with these when I was 10 years old!
I graduated from them to undergravel filters about 2 years later.
I used undergravel filters with powerheads for many years until I
discovered I didn't really need them anymore and I glad of it!
