Norm, excellent DIY topic. Obviously you have Carpentry skills most of all are extremely jealous about. I hope to be able to build a tank half as nice as yours one day. Great job.

And I for one support it being an Mbuna tank. I want to set up an 8 or 10 foot Mbuna tank (with a few haps/peacocks in there ofcourse) one day. I think seeing it filled with "schools" of mbuna would be awesome. Can't wait to see this finished up.

I've been a carpenter all my life and the wood part of it wasn't that challenging. Not trying to be braggadocios but they were pretty simple frame ups.

The real fun part for me was the design and thinking things through. I've always liked a challenge to put my skills up against. Some of my best work has been designing and building custom home bars and entertainment centers. Most of my customers have given me free hand to do what I want and create something very special for them.

Little update. Finally got the background back in and put in 150 pounds of QuikCrete all purpose sand. (This stuff took a lot of cleaning but the color is nice.) Had to straighten out some of the plumbing and fix - strengthen the bio-chamber. All that's left now is hooking up the sump pumps, the heaters and doing a little work on the hood before it goes back on. Should have water in it tonight. Very Happy

Leaks. Evil or Very Mad The tank and sump don't leak but everything else did. I got the tank filled and starting turning things on........Rats! run rat run Both overflows leaked at the tank gasket. Both gaskets leaked at the bio-chamber. The bio-chamber itself is leaking where the drip plate rest at the outside perimeter. The water gets by its edge and travel to the outside then drips to the floor. flamey To top it off I ran out of plastic glue and was unable to finish the spillway for the hydroponics trough so I had to shut in the anti-siphon valves to run the pumps.............You can see what's coming. Shocked

After trying to tighten everything to stop the leaks I gave up in frustration and shut the pumps off. Right at that moment my wife decided to distract me and while we were playing kissy face my 7 year old hollered the tank was over flowing.............Yep, The anti-siphons were still closed and the sump overflowed to the carpet. I practically ran over everybody to open the anti-siphons. Fortunately we have a shop vac and a carpet cleaner and were able to suck the carpet dry. As a matter of fact the cold water seemed to do a better job of cleaning the carpet then the hot water from the carpet cleaner. Go figure.

Anyway, I ended up using 2 gaskets on the overflows. One between the inside of the overflow and the bulkhead and the other one outside between the tank and the overflow box. Two leaks fixed. I need to run out and get a couple of more gaskets and do the same thing for the overflow line connecting to the bio-chamber. As for the drip-plate leaking at the outside perimeter I need to figure a way to seal it off.

More excitement to come later. bangin

Minor obstacles for a diy pro like yourself, I have full faith these minor glitches will be fixed and we'll be seeing pics of fish swimming real soon. Wink

Crap! I have one that's not so minor. I pulled the sump to take out the bio-chamber and found a 2' section of the side wall that was blistering and the plywood separating on the plane. This is major. bangin bangin bangin I don't know how the water got behind the epoxy but there is major damage. Crap, crap, crap, crap !!!!

I want to kick the dog but he's hiding. Razz

Got the sump out to the garage and I'm allowing the heat of the day to dry it out. A couple of options I've come up with and I'm open to anybody elses suggestion.
1. Take apart one of my broken aquariums and silicone in a piece of glass to cover the damaged section.
2. Bite the bullet and buy a roll of pond liner and do the whole sump.

The liner is definitely a good option.

Well the liner it is. I've had a very busy week and next week won't be much different. Hopefully next Saturday I'll pick up the liner and get this thing running again.

Anybody have any suggestions what to use to glue the liner to itself? The Home Despot and Lowe's didn't offer anything.

I'm also going to place both sump pumps on rails and suspend them with wire from the top of the sump. They were pretty noisy when the tank was running and suspending them is supposed to help cut the noise way back.

seems they'd carry something like this with the liners but I've never really looked for it

Progress report. There hasn't been any. Suspect

I got the pond liner but I just can't make it work with the sump as designed. I'm going to end up taking the top frame off the sump and re-doing it so I can get the liner to go up and over the top without having to cut it around the top framing rails that span the opening. This kind off pisses me off considering the time and effort I put into the sump itself.

I found the leak that started this catastrophe. The problem was it sat around open for so long that it ended up being used for storage and a place for my son and grandson to hide when they were toddlers. Somehow or another a deep scratch ended up in the epoxy coating near the center of the tank on the side that was hardest to see. Evil or Very Mad Being under the tank in the stand it never got noticed until I filled it with water.

Today is going to be spent re-doing it and hopefully have water in it tomorrow night.

Well I got the liner in and the sump back under the tank but won't be able to get any water in it till tomorrow. I had the family room torn apart when I pulled the sump and had to get it back together after I put the sump back in. That included putting all the furniture back in place and hooking back up the sound system and all the components.

I hate tearing things apart that I build. Their solid and most of the time don't come apart easily.

This is what it was.

350g tank build - Page 4 07-05-1-19053

This is how it ended up. I removed the top frame and added 1" x 4" around the outside top frame. This gave me a flat surface to staple the pond liner to.

350g tank build - Page 4 2010-08-08113336

Here it is with the liner placed inside. Thank goodness for my electric stapler. There has to be 500 staples holding the liner in place.
