I will try to confirm this.
If it's true, which wouldn't surprise me, we are looking another "Lake Victoria Disaster" right in the face.

So what was causing the warming in 500 A.D.? Cow flatulent? I think the bigger problem is the overfishing and improper use and irrigation of farmland.

Just because they call themselves scientists and publish a magazine doesn't make them an authority. The journal Nature Geoscience has only been around since 2008 and have already been forced to redact some of they're grandiose claims of disaster by other scientists that can actually read the numbers.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/feb/21/sea-level-geoscience-retract-siddall

Believe me, I do find what's happening to the lake alarming but I also feel real science is being stymied by those looking for grants to prove a theory that all too often is used to explain everything without question or discussion.

Very bad news! 16724

The last sentence in that article -- "But the paper admits that other factors, like overfishing, may be doing more harm than any warming."

Whatever the cause, I don't want to see the people or wildlife threatened.

Green house immissions includes wood burning. But yep cow flatlance (methane)does contribute a huge amount to green house gasses and yep major increase in cow numbers due to agriculture (though Wetlands (incl. Rice agriculture)arguably added more) both ancient and modern http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_methane. Strange when a joke turns out to have a lot of truth to it? Wink
Interesting the 0.9 C increase comes on top of a 1500 year high.
Water temps are slow to react to warming so green house gass immitions from 40-100 years ago would be just showing up, so yep they sure have a long way to go. As North America (Strange but true the immisions from this location affect the temp more in this region of Africa than they do localy) seems not to want to decrease immisions now or in the future. Sad

Hardly a retraction on Sea level change, just more evidence needed to draw the conclusion that Sea levels will for sure rise as much as originaly predicted and as fast as originaly predicted. Sad when a mistake causes over inflated claims as it kind of weekens the trust folk have in all predictions and start to beilive that all evidence based research could be flawed.

Yep overfishing and agriculture changes (deforestation around the lake, water running faster into the lake carrying soil and nutrients and urban and agricultural pollution running into the lake etc) are also major problems the lake and its fish face I think.

You never know a volcano eruption or two may come to our rescue cooling the planet but I sure would not bet on it.

Dunno? 0.9 C = 1.62 F, on top of a 1500 year high it seems an extreemly fast change to me, compared with natural fluctuations of the past that take thousands of years to measurably alter the temp. pale

Does anyone know or can find out the volume of Lake Tang? I guess from that we could work out the amount of power/heat that went in to produce this change?

It holds an estimated 18,900 km³ (4500 cubic miles).

If it was warmer 1500 years ago, why has it been a whopping 1.6F cooler until "recently"?

Have you read any of the links or looked any of this stuff up? Climate change due to green house gass immisions from the burning of fossil fuels. Melting polar ice caps etc. No new heat, just the Earths atmosphere loses less heat when coated in green house gasses and gets warmer. Water bodies, the Sea and large lakes soak up this extra heat in the short term (aprox takes 1000 times as much heat to raise an equal volume of water than air by one degree) but are damaged by it. 50% of coral world wide being bleached etc. Am I the only one who reads this stuff? Embarassed
As to the temps 1500 years ago I think happens to be the date when accurate temp records started. Dunno but may be better to say highest temperatures ever, as far as we know?

It's part of a natural cycle that's been going on since the first dinosaur had "flatus" Suspect Between every ice age is "global warming", then global cooling kicks back in. Before humans there were plenty of volcanoes and wild fires to keep the hole in the ozone going.
Very bad news! Image158

Even the articles say the fishing is to blame more than the warming of the lake
But the paper admits that other factors, like overfishing, may be doing more harm than any warming.

It's just a bunch of "pseudoscientists" spending their government grants for the new fad of "global warming". They're running out of things to explore and study, nobody cares if you discover a new insect or fish species, but if you have a theory that there's a particle of a cow fart 8 miles above the Earth's surface you can get a heckuva government grant to further your research and maybe even get your name in a magazine and stir a worldwide panic to bring in even more money. Acid rain, AIDS, Asbestos... The sun used to be good for you in the 70's back when it had Vitamin D, now it causes skin cancer Shocked

I'm sure we're not helping things by our oil spills, and driving, but just try to convince 7 billion people to be Amish, it won't happen.

Dunno mate that graph kind of misses the point (very reasuring to see temps were higher in the distant past before the 1950s but it dose not have the last 50-60 years on it!)
I was led to this kind of better balanced article.

Interesting that folk are now doing there own searching and asking questions about this stuff. Ah it warms my heart.

For sure who can say which is causing the most damage, rising temps (causing reduced productivity) or rising pressure from fishing, my guess is it is rather hard to sort out but the damage from both add to each other.
For sure do not take my word or Pams for anything and reseach the stuff yourself.
