Sponge filter Empty Sponge filter

Post by Aura Tue Apr 06, 2010 9:14 pm

Has anyone made their own sponge filters? I'm wondering what type of sponge would be best -- works well and isn't too expensive and is easy to find. Would an Aquaclear sponge insert work?

My young bristlenose are eating the sponges from my store-bought filters and one of them is looking a lot smaller and strangely shaped. Laughing I'll need to do something about that soon.

I think I found some sponges that will work. I dug around in my laundry room cabinets and found these. I just wish I could remember where they came from because there are only three left.

The size is almost perfect. I might be able to get two on there or I might have to try slicing one in half.

I covered my newer sponge filter with some mesh in hopes of keeping the plecos from eating this one.

This is the one that they have been eating. rant

I think the sponges are safe. There is nothing on the packaging about any additives, but I'll give them a very good rinse and soaking.

Hmm, I probably have one or two of those (unused) out in the garage somewhere. Thanks. Sponge filter Icon_smile

Vman, there is just so much pooping going on in these two growout tanks that I actually vacuum the sponges during water changes twice a day, every single day, and squeeze them out (lightly) once a week.

You say stay away from the dyed sponges because of ... possible toxins?

Dyes are toxic in large amounts . Sorry didn't mean to imply that you kept dirty tanks. I have 48 - 1.5" , 1 -3.5" ABN in a 20 long with 2 sponge filters & a aqua-clear & the sponges are intact .

Betty,

I have never experienced this myself.

I have sponge filters in most of my tanks.
I have 2 types of plecos. I have about 40 ABN in a 20 long with 2
80 Gal. sponge filters. They never touch them.
