Labs gone wild!! Empty Labs gone wild!!

Post by cancichfan Sat Mar 13, 2010 7:52 pm

It seems that there must have been a pretty wild party going on when I wasn't looking because I now have 2 yellow labs holding eggs. The first is the same one that spawned a month or so ago. The second is one of the G1 fish that I got from Larry Johnson. Looks like Larry's little girl is all grow'd up now.
As far as I can tell, the male is another yellow lab. But, there is always the chance that somebody snuck in when his back was turned. When the G1 was about to drop eggs, he was going absolutely wild around her. Shaking, dancing, basically doing anything to get her attention. Unfortunately, he's just an LFS yellow lab, probably G37 or so and since 1x37 is still 37, I won't be trying to save any of the little guys this time. The other one, is really skittish whenever I come near the tank. Probably still remembers my awkward fumbling when I stripped her the first time. Why do most of my stories about girls always end up with "awkward fumbling"? Jeff - I am NOT looking for a new tag line!

Here's a shot of the big stud and the G1.

Cool shot, he looks great for an LFS lab, never see any around here with full markings.

Great looking male you´ve got. That´s the way they all should look. We got some bad inbreeding of the yellow labs here. I always whistle this tune when I see them at the lfs.

It´s been a long long time since any breeders took in wc labs to Sweden.

Thanks. I got the male at my local fish store but who knows where he came from. He could have come from a hobbyist who had some young ones to sell. The female looks quite similar, good colour, lots of black so hopefully the two fry I am raising look good.
I just don't have the capacity to try to raise any more fry and there are RT Hongi and RT Zebra in the tank so the chances of hybrids are there. Maybe down the road I'll put him with some of Larry's females in a breeder tank and see what happens.

Now I go down today to find that one of my Otopharynx lithobates is holding as well. First spawn for her. Again, not sure who the father is, probably the male because he is now nicely coloured but there is an OB peacock in there as well as the aforementioned mbuna.

Don't like the idea of letting them spit in the tank just because I feel sorry for the fry but I guess unless I want to get into the fish breeding business I will have to get used to it.

3 fish holding right now. Must have been quite the weekend. My RT Hongi and one of the RT Zebra have been fighting a lot and both have damaged mouths. Must have been wresting around with each other and I think the zebra won because he's chasing the hongi around now. Maybe all this egg dropping has got the boys all riled up.
