Python Problems Empty Python Problems

Post by cancichfan Sun Feb 07, 2010 11:44 pm

I recently bought a 50 foot python that I thought was going to make my life so much easier. I am sick of carrying 5 gallon pails when I do water changes.
But, today when I went to use it, the only tap that would work was the kitchen tap upstairs and when I hooked it up, I could only get the water to raise a couple of feet above the top of the water level in the tank. Eventually I gave up and used it like a 50 foot syphon. I think I could have bought 50 feet of garden hose for an awful lot less. Anyway, anyone have any idea why it isn't working properly? My first guess is that there isn't enough water pressure in the house to get enough vacuum out of the venturi. Sound possible?
Thanks
Graham

You can find all kinds of adapters at lowes. I even made my own for the kitchen faucet as they had nothing that matched up to mine. I made it out of 3/4 id clear vinyl hose (a 4" piece), a 3/4 vinyl barb/male connector (threads the same size as the male end of a garden hose, screws right into the python pump), and 2 hose clamps. I screw the connector with the 4" piece of vinyl attached to the python, slide the vinyl over the kitchen faucet and secure with a hose clamp. There's gotta be a way to hook it up to a faucet on the same level of the house that the tanks are on. Once you find something that will work, it will make your life much easier Wink

Thanks. I will see if I can find an adapter. Trouble is, there is no sink on the level where the tank is. I would love a laundry tub but it's $1200 for a pump to pump the water up to the level of the drain (obviously this is in the basement) and I just can't justify that much cost. I'll try the bathroom sink, assuming I can find the proper adapter, and see if it works better.

Graham, you might want to check out the Safety Siphon devices at this site -- http://jehmco.com/html/safety_siphon_aquarium_drain.html

I'm not sure if they would work for your situation, but the ones with the powerheads should be able to pump water up and out. And they won't waste a ton of water.
