Re: The Fish Room (Round 2)

Post by Rift_Lakes_Rule on Wed Feb 03, 2010 7:04 pm

Thanks everyone!!! Wink

Sorry I haven't been answering any questions but I've been working till 11 - 11:30 every night this week on the fishroom and haven't had much time for anything else.

I don't have a plan yet as far as how many tanks. It will depend on what I can afford most likely. I have several empty tanks ready and waiting, just gotta figure out what I'm going to stock them with and get them as I can afford it.

The sheet is actually a comforter, it's being used as a temporary door. It keeps drywall dust from getting all over the house as well as keeping the heat in the fishroom. The basement is currently unheated and stays around 45 degrees.

I don't have an automatic water change system planned. I've thought about it quite a bit but decided I didn't want to trust a sump pump. I would have to pipe it into the ceiling to get it across the hallway and into a mop sink and have a sump pump. If I would have thought ahead when building the house, I would have put floor drains in the basement. oops!!!

The floor will be bare concrete. I thought about painting the floor but decided I'd just leave it as is.

Thanks again everyone. Time to get back to work Wink

Well, thanks to the help of a couple of friends (dmetal-Brian, and Jordan who will be joining us very soon)...

There is a rack in the fishroom!!! cheers

It will hold 5 40longs and 4 10's (or 6 40longs)

So far there is only one tank up and running, a 10g with paracyp fry Wink

So far I haven't, I have some small diameter steel cable that I will anchor it with if it starts feeling wobbly. As of right now it's real steady but we'll see as I start putting tanks on it Wink

Drywall doth suck but it looks like you did a good job. The blue walls redneck will save you from having to paint the back of the tanks............to late. I see one is already black. I like your idea of the built in timer.

Will all the tanks your going to put in there are they going to have separate filters or are you setting up a centralized system?

Thanks guy's Wink

Norm, I considered a centralized sump but I think I'm going to go with 1 HOB and a sponge matten filter on the 40's, matten filters on the 10's. I'm hoping to have a wall of 75's for Tropheus as well (4 tanks), not sure what I'm going to do there, was considering 2 sumps along with either a canister or HOB on each tank... we'll see.

I'm not a big fan of blue backgrounds or being able to see thru the tank so all the tanks will most likely be painted black and growouts will be green.

My fish room now is the third I built. The first two had a central system and the gave me more headache then anything else. Lost a lot of fish that way. This time I decided on individual tanks and I am much happier. All tanks are completely covered and the shelving units are totally closed in. The cost is not more then with the central system and the heaters come on very seldom. Personally I will never have a central system again. I'm running 24 tanks from 10g to 160g.

These are the readings I get behind the closure.

Klaus, I've seen your fish-room somewhere else before..........
Now where could that have been? ponder
I had always admired your walled in look. It really focuses your attention to the tanks.

Have you thought about a centralized air system that is so popular among breeders? All you would need are lift tubes at the back of your matten pads. Of course it's been so long since I've used an air pump for filtration I have no idea anymore how much water they can move. scratch

Not at the moment, I've got 2 ten's and 1 40 set up and running. It's hard to do anything down there, the Tropheus, Simochromis, Troph fry and Paracyp fry keep me very distracted
