well on that note what about a pair of texas cichlids? i ask cause i dont really know the tank size requirements for CA SA fish and would a pair of sevrums be to much one or the other not both.

a pair of texas cichlids in a 55 would work for awhile when the fish are small but at some point the male would most likely kill the female texas cichlids are very aggressive and i have seen them take over a whole tank and the other fish one at a time, but the severum would do fine in the same tank i, if it was me i would get small fish maybe the size of a quarter and i would get 5 fish to start with and you can mix the greem and the gold in the same tank with no trouble, after about 6 to 8 months you will be able to pick the best looking fish and trade off the others, but if the texas is the fish you really want i would try to put 1 texas with red devil or festae these fish are just has tough as the texas.

If you want something not to common, a Texas is not the way to go. At least in my area they are one of the cheapest CA fish along with Convicts. You might see if Aequidens pulcher (Blue Acara) or Geophagus sp. "Araguari - Orange Head" are available in your area. Both of those get fairly big 6-8 inches but are not overly aggressive. Both of those are fish suggested to me when I was trying to research fish for a 55 gallon. Your choices for a breeding pair in a 55 will be limited with SA/CA fish as most of them require more room but you will find a few.

Here are a few to look up
Archocentrus nanoluteus
Archocentrus panamense
Neetroplus nematopus "The Poor Man's Tropheus"
Archocentrus centrarchus
