Hot Glue Empty Hot Glue

Post by cancichfan Sun Feb 14, 2010 12:58 pm

Has anyone ever used a hot glue gun for assembling things in a fish tank? Is it toxic? Does it hold in water?

I want to use it to attach rocks together to build caves. I've got some left over slate tiles from another job and I thought I could break them into random shapes and glue them together. I know silicone works too, I just thought this would be faster without the curing time etc.
Thanks
Graham

I don't know about hot glue but I do know that silicone will eventually lose its adhesive to rock once it's immersed. Best thing to do is stack the stones so they can't fall over. If you need to use an adhesive to hold things together that gravity might otherwise cause to fall over I would recommend an epoxy glue that is water potable safe.

Here's a shot of what I am thinking of. I did this one with silicone and yes, it is a bit "Gobby" but I doubt the fish will care. Picture this turned over and pushed into the sand to make a little cave. Inspired by all the years I spent watching the Flintstones and their houses. Yabadabadooo!

Hot glue would make this a lot easier and quicker.

As I said in my previous post. Silicone will lose its grip on the rocks and it won't take much to knock things down. The only times I've used hot glue were on some ceramic projects that weren't going in the aquarium. It was good for a quick stick but I felt silicone stuck better.

Thanks Iceblue.

I will try to stack whatever rocks I get in such a manner that they don't need adhesives to hold them in place. I was just trying to think of a way to make it easier to establish a "Cave" that I could remove if needed for cleaning substrate and put back without having to do too much re-organizing. It seems in my mbuna tank that I am constantly stacking and unstacking rocks to clean and I never get them the same way twice (which may not be a bad thing).

If I decide to use my little cave, it will be stand alone and I won't make it a load-bearing structure.
