I am thinking about using a sediment filter like this,
Home made filter system Sedimentfilter2

for mechanical filtration on my 75g salt tank. I am currently running a fluidized bed filter for bio filtration that needs about 150gph* flow rate. A 30 micron sediment filter has a flow rate of 600gph*. So, I am thinking if I run these two filters in parallel with a Mag Drive 9.5, I would have just enough gph to make everything work. The MG9.5 has a 800gph* rate at 4'.

Feedback please.

* all flow rates are as specified on the product

After a little more thought, I realized that this configuration wont work right. All of the water needs to pass through the mechanical filter first. Then, it needs to split so the flow to the fluidized bed can be controlled.

I'm running my fbf off of a canister filter, I have the return line of the canister tee'd off, one line goes to the fbf, the other has a valve and just empties into the tank. I tried it with the valve on the line going to the fbf and it just didn't have the power to get it started (followed the path of least resistance). It was a lot easier to conrol the flow to the fbf with the valve on the other line.
I think the house filter would work in a series, that way you wouldn't get poop and other debris in the fbf, but the house filter might clog faster than a cheap canister filter. FBF also use up a lot of oxygen, so you would still need surface movement with a powerhead or other filter.

I see your point about valve placement to control fbf level. As for the filter clogging, 30 micron might be a bit small and you could be right about that. I need to look at some of the pleated filters in the 50 micron and up area. The problems I have seen with the pleated is that a lot have a metal web that may not work so well with salt water. As for oxygen transfer, I was thinking about using some of these pieces and parts to get some surface break, http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+10090+4090&pcatid=4090 Also, I will have two maxi jets with mod kits.
