Confused males?

Post by Aura on Tue Dec 29, 2009 1:38 pm

Anyone ever have two males "spawn" with each other?

I am pretty sure that these two are males, but they were going through the motions yesterday. The compressiceps dug out a pit in the sand and they went around and around. The other fish is what I assumed was the subdominant male of what I purchased as red empress, but has been identified as a possible Taiwan reef or a hybrid. There were no eggs. I've never had two males do this before. Suspect

Hmm, that's interesting, Mitch. Well at least there won't be any hybrid babies as a result of this type of behavior. Very Happy

This is commonly called a dominance dance or color fight . Either way it is a way of survival. A lot of males pose as females to survive & breed . Some males, in the wild, spend most of their lives like this & sneak into the spawning sites to fertilize some of the eggs without being attacked by the unsuspecting dominate male. If they color up then the dance turns into a fight . In your case the smaller male is just trying not to get beat up .
