Fry + Holding Female together?

Post by yodahorn on Sat Sep 15, 2012 1:10 pm

One of my female labs spit fry a few days ago. The fry are in a 20 gallon long. The mom is back in the 75 with the other adult labs. I have another female holding (just noticed it yesterday - not too far along). Was afraid to put her in the 20 with the other female's fry. What about using this in the 20 long as she gets closer to spitting?:

Is there any way you can get the fry over to one side and divide the tank? That breeder box looks like it releases the fry into the tank and depending on how much the older fry have grown and how long the new mom holds, there could be a size difference that would make it unsafe for the new babies to be mixed with the others.

Probably not, there is a planted piece of driftwood that is more than half the lenght of the 20 long. The fry should'nt be more than 3-4 weeks apart.

Three to four weeks is a lot of growth if they are eating well and you keep up with good water changes. In my experience, the newly spit fry are not as "street smart" and would need some time to get used to their new surroundings. They'd be vulnerable in the beginning.

If you can find a way to divide the tank, I think they would be safer in a breeder box for a week or two, or in a 10 gallon tank of their own. (I'm sure the mom would prefer a 10 gallon over a small breeder box.)

10 gallon isn't gonna happen. I'll try to divide the 20 gal long.

I bought a tank divider last night, caught the holding female from the 75 and moved her to the divided 20 long. She doesn't have a ton of room, but much than my original idea.

How long has she been holding? If she is close to being ready to spit, just strip her and drop her back in the tank. I think with some fish species, having one group member out of the tank too long, causes re-introduction issues.. I prefer to strip and put her immediately back in with the group.

At least 3 weeks. When I caught her she spit one of the fry and it is fine swimming freely. I've never tried stripping, but intentionally waited this time until she was close to releasing.

Let us know how it goes.

I prefer not to strip, but there are times when it's a good option.

She released a couple of days ago on the divider side of the tank. The divider was not a perfect seal and the fry escaped to the side of the tank with the larger fry. So they two size fry are in the 20 long together and we will just have to see how it goes.
