first jewel spawn
At the last auction, I picked up a bag with 4 jewel cichlids, mostly because my spousal unit Stu had seen some colored up jewels at LFS and liked them. I got two in breedsing colors, and two smaller ones. I separated them, and I think they are two pairs, as the smaller ones are now colored up also.
The first, larger pair i put in a 20 long, and today I came in from work and found a CLOUD of tiny fry around them.
Puts me in mind of the red devils with fry pics....
Anyone have any experience with raising these guys? Stu and i are both wondering if ma and pa jewel might go on a cann balistic feeding frenzy...

I've always loved the look of jewels. I had a few mixed in with my Africans long ago, but they didn't do well with them. Congrats on the spawn. I hope they're good parents.

I really had never seen any until just recently. I did a search on them and saw lots
of pics and anecdotes about how they did NOT do well with RL Africans.
It is kind of cool and novel to me that here are cichlids that actually have parenting
skills. Makes me want to investigate some of the SA and CA cichlids now.

My other pair of jewels has fry also! I had put them in the 33 long with all the plants,
BNs and the pair of T. ansogii (that haven't spawned to my knowledge) and for the last couple of days the smaller brightest red one was hiding out in a BN ceramic cone.
I came in today and they have a cloud of miniscule fry hanging out around the cone.
I guess I should move the ansogii befor they are massacred by the jewels.

Re: first jewel spawn
I sold one pair of jewels (Rare Dave tells me they are Hemichromis guttatus) at the last auction, and kept the pair I suspected to be the younger pair. They spawned a third tiime successfully, and the fry are doing well and growing like weeds, but...
I think I have a freak of nature in the group.
There is some size variance with in the group of fry but one of them is HUGE! It is 4 or 5 times bigger than the
biggest of the others. It's nearly the size of a platy, where the rest of them are maybe twice the size of newly
spit mbuna fry. I'm going to move "Baby Huey" to another tank today before he starts trying to snack on his runty
siblings. I'm going to have to take a picture of him with the others before I move him.
Some fry always seem to grow faster than others, but this guy is crazy!
