Transporting Fish Empty Transporting Fish

I am facing the possibility of having to relocate due to my employment. Does anyone have any experience/suggestions on how to move these guys safely, with minimal stress? If I do have to move, it is 5 hours by car.

You can easily bag them and move them in a styrofoam cooler. 5 hrs wouldn't be a problem at all. Put a couple drops of stress coat in the bag or bag buddies. Bag your filter media in tank water also, that will keep the bacteria alive.

The auction fish stay in the bags way longer than 5 hours.. they should be fine.
I bag my fish with fresh, de-chlorinated water, not with the tank water. And I put them in a bucket of tank water for a bit, before bagging them, because they always
poop there first, less waste to go to the bags as they are being moved.

I'm thinking that I am going to transport the fish bagged and load the tanks in my vehcle (they will fit) but I am concerned about not having the stands as they will be arriving via a shipping company (they arrive like the cable guys - sometime between Monday and Thursday...) Without the stands, they will be in tanks without decor until I can get the stands set up...

How long do you think they can endure while bagged? I will need time to break the tanks down, load them, transport them, then set them back up... I'm thinking no longer than a day total time (gonna be difficult, but I will do whatever is necessary!)

I would fast them at least a day prior to bagging, and put as few in each bag as you can get away with. Aggressive ones should have their own bag. They should be able to stay that way until you get their tank set up. They are probably in bags longer than that when they are shipped from online orders.

I have seen them shipped 2 day and be fine in bags.
Fix your tanks with as little stuff as you have to.
When your stands arrive. Use the big storage tubs to put water and fish.
Set the tank up on stands. Add water and fish back to tank.
Established sponge filters help promote healthy bacteria.
Do not let your filters dry out.

Thanks for the help! I just have to go find bags...

This is going to stress me out more than the fish (I think)...

Yea I would bag them and if its only a couple days ucan put ur fish in any clean container with a heater and at least a bubbler for oxygen and movement .. if longer than couple days ull want a filter but fish wil b ok without a real tank for few dayz long as water is warm and clean. Unless maybe ur fish are wild caught but most arnt they shouldn't get stressed this way for few days.

when I moved to my new place, I actually put them in a 125 quart cooler with a large clear trash bag then put a U2 fluval filter in the back of my honda element, they were doing quite well in there for at least 6 hours, I had a power converter hook up in the back of my honda for the filter!

i moved from NY to VA, 8hr drive plus 2hrs to bag and prep for the drive and 2-3 hrs to get the tank set up.so your looking at a minimum of 12 hrs bagged. i used kordons breather bags but you can go to your LFS and get some bags from them. all the fish arrived safely and didnt seem to have much stress. a word of advice, if your fish are healthy give them a fasting period for 2 days(dont feed) so less chance to foul the water in shipping. BTW it was also the coldest day of the winter on the east coast. And i transported 11 adult discus all in the 6-8 inch range.threw some hand warmers in the cooler with the a t-shirt over them then the fish on top.i also had a digital thermometer in the middle of the cooler for a rough temp.

Well, trhe move was 'somewhat' a success. I lost 2 Auratas, 2 Kenyi, a Red Zebra, and a sunshine peacock... NOT too happy about that...

On a good note, though, I unpacked these guys, and found an OB Zebra was holding. I have 8 new additions to my tank!
