Drilled Tank
G'day all,
I have been looking at making an overflow and sump for my 4ft tank since I robbed my canister filter from it to add to my 7ft tank. I first looked at diy pvc overflow systems that require no drilling holes in the glass but they all look a little ugly and bulky plus I have a hood that would be hard to work with. I then started looking at overflows that require drilled tanks and have seen just about every youtube clip on the subject and the driller nearly always makes the comment that it is easy. To anyone out there who has attempted this successfully or not some input would be greatly appreciated as I am having my suspicions that it is not all that easy.

It really is THAT easy, scary, but easy. I used a glass-holes kit for the 120, just let the drill do the work.

Yeah, make sure it's not tempered, the hole might end up a lot bigger than you want.

From what I have found out you can't. I have looked up differences between tempered and non tempered glass but it is still difficult to say what type it is. I work with a guy who knew and worked for the person that made my tank so maybe he will know if the tank is tempered.poolmako wrote:i dont think you can drill tempered glass and most 4 foot tanks are tempered glass.

if its a homemade tank it could be anything but i know most store bought 4 foot tanks are tempered, also tempered glass will flex or bow some before it breaks.

Re: Drilled Tank
I just done a test that I found on another site that involves the polarity of believe it or not your laptop computer screen. if you hold your laptop up to the tank with a white screen and look through the tank a tempered tank will show streaks across the glass a non tempered tank will remain streak free.
Mine is streak free. I did notice my tank has a few little chips out of the top edges of the glass and am wondering if it were tempered wouldn't it just shatter? http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?224409-How-to-tell-if-glass-is-tempered...
