How do you tie mosses to drift wood and PVC? And how do you tie plants to rocks?

i tried that last time and it didnt work how do you know when its to tight? and how can you tight it around a plant liek anubis? with out killing the roots?

I used sewing thread, wrapped around a few times kinda loose.

I've used thread or rubber bands and even tried a hair net for java moss one time. I liked the rubber band because it decomposed over time and by then the root was attached.

hmm ok is the rubber band ok to be in the water like that? and would it be best to attach the plants above the water or in the water?
