Does my new purchase need more time to aclimate, or are they DOA?
Last week I brought some yellow, feathery kind of polyps, and they are going great and look amazing. So yesterday I went in to get some
SW, and they had some small plugs of similar looking polyps, only green, for $10.00
When I got home with them, of courseas they were all closed up, looked like a big dab of oatmeal stuck to the plug. Still looked that way when I put out the light last night.
So far this morning they still haven't opened up... everything else is... so what do you think?

Well, it's been 24 hours, and the green polyps still look like dried out oatmeal...
That is the first SW critter that hasn't made it.
I will leave them in the tank for a few more days, maybe they will come back to life, but it's looking kinda bad...
What do you think, Chris?

any chance there is a big difference in light intensity from what the polyps were in to your tank now. most zoanthids are notoriously hardy, but a big difference in light intensity will stress them.
i would still give them time... mabey hit them with some phyto/zoo plankton to entice them to open.
i've had plenty of frags not open for 2-3 days that are doing just fine now.

I know the lights on my tank are not what was on them at the store, but they are up
high in the tank right under the light, and the yellow polyps close beside them, and
the other zoanths and mushrooms are opened up.
I have a 15 gallon tank, and 96 watts of light on them.
I will leave them there until they start to melt, lol, which they have not done so far.
Thanks for the advice!
How's your new business going?
I wish there was someone who was a SW expert to partner with me (I'd do freshwater)
and call the business "Rift and Reef", lol.

mabey try them somewhere lower in the tank for a week or so and see how they do. they might be getting too much light.

Wow, you must have been right! On Tuesday I did my regular 40% water change, and pickd up the little ceramic square and dropped it to the bottom of the tank on the sand... today I came in and (wonder of wonders!) out of the "dried oatmeal" are little tiny tendrils coming out on a few of the polyps, not all over it but at least the critter
ain't dead!
When I bought it, it was full and green and feathery, maybe it will recover. (fingers
crossed)
The light on there now is a 96watt 10,000K CFL quad, I'm waiting for the 50/50 replacement to come in because my other one burnt out.
I'm so happy for you andf your new business!

This morning almost all the polyps have opened up, but it still looks nothing like it did in the shop, they are only about 1/3 as extended as they were, but at least they are
alive! YAY!
The different light has also started some funky looking algae to grow in places on the rocks, sort of like a patch of slimy green looking stuff. I was able to scrape most of it off the other day, and will try to get the rest of it off when I do my next water change.
