120 gal Empty 120 gal

Post by addicted2cichlid Sat Aug 07, 2010 12:11 pm

So my store is having a big sale on most items. it looks like our Hagen reps are in bed with this new company called Deep Blue Professional. They are out of Austin Texas, which leads me to believe its another group of some of the old oceanic guys down there. Deep Sea Aquatics is a big chunk of ex Oceanic guys out of Dallas, so i'm thinking Deep Blue is just another chunk of them, especially with both companies products being pushed by Hagen (our last sale we carried the Deep Sea tanks). Anyway, they are providing out tanks for the sale, ranging from a 5.5gal to a 150 gal, standard All Glass sizes. 120 gal tank, reef ready, back corner overflow boxes, and black silicone, comes with all plumbing/overflow kit: $270.

i cant pass it up. the deal is too good. ive been doing some research on the company and little is to be found. They have only been around for a couple months. i talked with our hagen reps because i was wondering what is tempered, thickness of the glass, and overflow box locations on the 120's. He didint tell me much other than the black silicone, and the reef ready tanks are drilled on the bottom, the glass isnt starfire but is clearer than all glass tanks and corner overflows.

we will see, like i said, to good of a deal to pass up. be excited for the future 120gal reef! i sure am.

i will be building the stand, and most likely use my 40 long, 55, or perhaps 40 breeder for the sump/fuge.

i will be ordering Aquatraders 716w 4ft light: 2x 250w halides with 4x 4ft T5 HO's, OR, three of there 4x 4ft T5 HO fixtures (12 t5's total)

Ill have the tank August 20th.

Post by addicted2cichlid Thu Aug 19, 2010 10:51 am

so we got the tanks in for the sale yesterday, which was supposed to include mt drilled 120 gal.... well the store ordered one, i ordered one, but only one came... SOB, expletive, expletive!!!

i guess they are so new (of a company) that they are having a hard time keeping up with the order... bogus. ive been on the phone with them all morning trying to get mine and a few other "ordered but never arrived tanks" made and shipped out. only problem is they want us to pay shipping again, and our tanks are coming out of Massachusetts...

we will see, i am not allowed to buy the one the store ordered, but tried to get another semi-big order to hit there minimum for free shipping... i figure there will be rain-checks and so forth. I NEED THAT TANK!

Not impressed so far Deep Blue, tanks look decent, but if u talk the talk, u need to walk the walk...

i have heard of the company and also did dome research on them and found very little information. The lfs here sells some of their lights and they seem really nice especially for the price. Good luck with tank.

well there undrilled tanks seem to be alright, but after setting up 3 of there drilled tanks, i would never buy one of there reef ready aquariums.

CHEAP, the over flow boxes are poorly constructed, the overflow plumbing kit is a joke (plastic bulkhead wrench REALLY?!) loud, and the locline is some cheapo ripoff. the outlet nozzle is smaller than a pea! the bulk heads including in the plumbing kit are cheap plastic... silicone bead seems to be thin. even the trim of the tanks feels chincy.

so, sadly this 120 isn't going to happen.

Wow. A less experienced hobbyist is going to think it's great......for a while any way. Sometimes when it's too good to be true.... it is.

Do the un-drilled tanks look sturdy enough to hold up over time?

i don't know, iffy at best, they only carry a 5 year warranty! after setting up a few i'm embarrassed were even carrying them. its one thing to carry cheapo filters and dry goods, but when it comes to the actual aquarium i believe quality trumps anything. The damage and danger that a faulty aquarium could do is serious.

Agree with that sentiment completely. Does anyone here know if O'Dell tanks are still being made? Back in my early years they were the tank to have; always one thickness larger than the others, proper reinforcement where needed, unfailingly nice to look at. I suppose that means they have gone under... Suspect

Too bad, but thanks for the info... I'll know what kind of things to look for if and when I take that "big saltwater" plunge!
As far as older tanks being better constructed, I bought an old used Oceanic 55
(not drilled) to put in my fishroom, Holy Cow, it's made of glass twice as thick as anything else I have, the center brace is a wide plate of thick glass, not plastic, the frame is real wood, not plastic, and it weighs a ton... I guess they made things better
"back in the day".

That sounds like my old 55 except the frame isn't wood -- it has that thick glass center brace and the dimensions are a little wider, front to back, than the 55s they make now. I bought it in California back in '84 and it has moved to seven states and sat in storage for about four years when we went to Japan. It's pretty scratched up, but still holding water after all these years. (I do worry about it after what happened to Håkan's old tank.) I wonder how much longer it can possibly last.

old oceanic tanks are the best! i still have a couple old heavy-as-heck 55's in mom's garage. and a bullet proof 40 long, my old 55's have no center braces though!
