Young moms Empty Young moms

Post by Aura Fri Nov 20, 2009 12:43 pm

I've read a lot about first-time moms not being good holders, but I have a lot of young ones that hold and hold, past what I would consider their release dates. Hope she releases soon; she's looking a little thin and ragged and she's just a tiny little thing. I really don't want to have to catch her and I do not need any more fry!

Maybe I'll throw in a bunch of fake plants to make a spot that she might feel more secure in releasing them.

Great shots Betty Wink

The fake plants just might do the trick if the other fish don't dig them up first. The only way I could ever keep fake plants in my mbuna tanks was to plant it in a rock pile that they couldn't move... worked like a charm.

As you probably remember Aura, I once had a large female
Yellow Lab hold for 30 days!
She finally spit on her own and I got about 25 fry from her!

But I agree with Drake- tripod;
Seems like every time I try to net a holding female she spits
them in the tank before I can remove her!

Good luck Aura!

Well I tried netting her without removing the rocks during a water change and had an impossible time. And added plants to no avail.

I really don't want to have to remove rocks!!

My afra puulu mom was the only mom I have had to swallow fry. Before I run out of room in a 55, a 20 and 2 10's I used to break down a tank every time I had a holding female to catch her. Lately I have been just seeing how many make it unless I really want some of the species.

That's an awesome setup Betty!!!

I can see how you would have a hard time netting a fish in there, I bet you had a hard time just getting the net in the tank with all those rocks Laughing Sure does look good tho Wink

Looking good, very nice setup. Catching holding females is a pita.

She finally spit over the weekend, so I didn't have to take all of those rocks out. I caught a glimpse of something very small darting under a rock so there is at least one survivor. It probably won't last long in there though.

The male has been busy: there are two more females holding now. These are still all young ones.

Here he is -- young male showing off. You can see the holding female in the corner. She was looking pretty skinny.

Really nice set-up. That tank would color up any room. Love the rock work. Where did u find them? I´ve seen rocks like that in streams by some Swedish mountains.

I got them from a stream near Mt. Rainier.

I picked up several different types. I still don't know which I like better.... These are four different types in this tank that I was trying to decide between.

That´s awesome. To be able to pick up different types of rocks at the same place. Different shades of grey and also red. I think that grey and red works perfectly together, as long as there are more of the grey in the tank.

I put some of the red rocks in with the leleupi. After looking at yours against the dark colored rocks, I thought I'd give it a try. Makes a nice contrast.

I didn't leave those rocks in the tank; I just wanted to see what they looked like under water. I went with the rocks with the white lines in them for that tank.

I didn't think about mixing them, might have to try that. I'm going to have to go back in the spring and get more. Very Happy

Labs seem to hold longer than most. My blue dolphins only hold about 18 days & my german red peacocks spawn at 1.5" & carry to full term on the 1st time. My blueberry zebra females didn't carry to full term until the 3rd time . It really depends on the breed . Beautiful male btw!
