Geophagus tank

Post by yodahorn on Wed Jul 21, 2010 8:08 am

Hopefully Klaus will read this:

I am getting four Geophagus Iporangensis for my 60 gallon tank. Therefore I planning on replacing the substrate with sand. The tank will be set with ferns and anubias on lava rock in the back with sand in the front.

Questions -

What type of sand should I get?
Any recommended food I should feed them?
Any other fish that would work with them - clown loaches, tetras, Angel fish?

Oh, also what do I do to prevent sand from getting in the filter?

Yoda, these fish are part of the "Brasiliensis" complex and I don't have much experience with them. However, I know that they are a very robust species that will change the aquarium decoration to their liking. They can easily reach 8-9 inches and are VERY hungry.

What type of sand should I get?
I prefer fine silica sand in my Geophagus tanks because it is heavier then other types and does not easily siphon out.

Any recommended food I should feed them?
Although they eat just about anything, the preferred food is a bit chunkier like raw fish, krill etc.

Any other fish that would work with them - clown loaches, tetras, Angel fish?
Here I would be very careful. Peaceful fish will have trouble getting their share of the food, so angels would be out in my opinion.

Oh, also what do I do to prevent sand from getting in the filter?
All I do is leave the intake tube about 4" of the sand surface. So far that has worked OK for me. You can also stick a piece of foam on the end of the intake tube.

Thanks, Klaus - this particular species is only supposed to get around 4".

decided not to go this route, too much trouble to make the switch and the geophaguses that I was going to get did not work out.

If it's just plain silica sand with no additives, it should be safe. Is it the black sand that you want? If not, they have large bags of white silica sand in the section that they keep the concrete mix and it's cheaper in price. It's a little small grained for my liking. Have you looked at this sand you linked to in person to see what it looks like?

Not yet, I got some 1" gymnogeophagus balzani and am looking to finally set up an eartheather tank with them, so trying to figure out the best sand option. Klauss had mentioned silica sand before. I think the black would be cool, but it is not a must have.

All of my pool filter sand is silica sand. It's a heavier, larger grain size than a lot of the other silica sands I've tried or looked at. It's just a personal preference -- I find the smaller grain sands compact more and are harder to vacuum without sucking it up. It does look nice though.
