4 ft Cabinet Build
Last week I decided to have a go at building a cabinet and hood for my old 4ft tank. It is nowhere near finished yet but thought I would post some photos anyway. I looked at so many cabinets, hoods and stands trying to get some good ideas together and this is what I have come up with so far.The stand is made of pine and the cabinet is made from Australian Hardwood. I decided on hardwood only because I got an absolute bargain for the doors (already made) for $5 each. I knocked up the hood about a month ago out of scraps in my shed to get a bit of an idea how it would look and work. Go easy on me I know it is a little rough but hopefully when it is finished it will do the job.

Re: 4 ft Cabinet Build
Done a little more work to my cabinet over the week. It now has sides, a skirting or kickboard around the bottom of the cabinet, a skirting board around the top to surround the tank and the doors have handles. I really need to invest in a decent drop saw cause mine just doesn't cut it. I now have to nock up a hood as the one i have is made from scraps and was only made for an idea of how it would work. Then hopefully I can wood putty (my best friend), sand and varnish the whole thing. I was worried when the tank is filled it would be too top heavy but now i shouldn't be cause the cabinet feels like it ways a ton.

Very nice. It looks like it brings the tank up to a good height for viewing.

Thanks everyone but up close it has a few defects but it is a big improvement on the old stand I made about ten years ago wich now looks bare and in desperate need for a tank to make complete he he he. My addictions starting to take shape.

Once you get that tank decorated and full of fish, no one will notice any flaws, even up close.

Re: 4 ft Cabinet Build
I finished building my tank hood and fitting a fluro light a couple of weeks ago. I sanded and used a varnish stain (maple color) to complete the build. Depending on the filter I use I may have to modify the back of the hood by cutting out a portion to fit a bio wheel filter but thats easy enough. I'm still undecided. I'm happy with the end result. It was a cheap cabinet to build compared to the price of a new one and it is made from a strong wood which has a nice grain effect.

Damn I knew it was missing something. I will have a new heater by next week, then I need to buy a couple more lids and then it's ready for filling. Can't wait.bulldogg7 wrote:Looks great, but you forgot the WATER!
